Global debt rose by around $7.5 trillion in the first three months of the year to hit a record high of over $324 trillion, data from a banking trade group showed on Tuesday. US trade deficit hit fresh record in March
The US trade deficit reached a new record in March, according to fresh government data published Tuesday, coming in deeper than expected as imports surged before President Donald Trump's "liberation day" tariff rollout. The overall trade gap of the world's largest economy jumped 14.0 percent to $140.5 billion, the Commerce Department said in a statement. A nationwide mock drill is scheduled for May 7, 2025, across 244 districts of India. The BJP Parliamentary Party office has asked all BJP MPs to participate in the drill as ordinary citizens and cooperate with the local administration. State presidents have also been requested to work with senior office-bearers and district presidents to ensure smooth execution.

The European Union will publish plans on Tuesday to ban new Russian gas deals by the end of the year, and phase out existing contracts with Moscow by end-2027, three EU officials told Reuters.
The European Commission will on Tuesday publish a "roadmap" of how it plans to end Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027. The roadmap will include a commitment to propose, in June, a ban on new Russian gas import deals and spot contracts by the end of 2025, the officials said.
The roadmap will also include a commitment to make a legal proposal to ban Russian gas and liquefied natural gas imports under existing contracts by the end of 2027, said the officials, granted anonymity to discuss the confidential plans, which could still change before they are published.

Six killed in road crash in UP's Shahjahanpur
Six persons were killed in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a car in Madnapur area here, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place near Kawilpur village on the Bareilly-Etawah road on Monday night, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi said.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the motorcycle's fuel tank exploded and caught fire, he said.
While car occupants Sudhir (40) and Sonu (18) died on the spot, the four motorcycle riders -- Ravi (20), Akash (20), Dinesh (19), and Abhishek (19) -- were rushed to a hospital in a critical condition but succumbed to their injuries.
The SP said the motorcycle riders were residents of Tilhar town and had gone to attend a feast in a nearby village in Madnapur area.

Services sector growth picks up in April
India's services sector growth picked up slightly in April after March's slowdown as demand expanded robustly, although optimism was its weakest in nearly two years, a survey showed on Tuesday. UP CM directs officials to prepare for storm, heavy rain
In view of the storm and heavy rain alert in UP, CM Yogi Adityanath has directed the officials of the concerned districts to conduct relief work with full promptness. In case of any loss, ex-gratia must be distributed immediately. Eight people died and two others were injured in a head-on collision between a car and a tractor in Bihar's Katihar district, police said on Tuesday. The car passengers were returning from a wedding function when the accident took place Sameli block office on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, they said, adding that efforts are on to identify the victims.

3 dead, 5 injured in shooting at crowded event in Arizona
A fight between groups of people with a history of "bad blood" escalated Sunday night into a shooting outside a concert and car show at a suburban Phoenix restaurant, leaving three dead including a teenager and five others injured, police said. The shooting outside El Camaron Gigante Mariscos & Steakhouse was an "isolated incident," and authorities believe more than one person fired shots, said Glendale Police Department spokesperson Jose Santiago. Between 200 and 300 people were in attendance at the outdoor venue when the shooting broke out.
8 killed in fiery highway crash in eastern Kansas
Two vehicles collided head-on and burst into flames on a two-lane highway in rural eastern Kansas, killing eight people, including a high school student, a teacher-coach and a school employee from Oklahoma, authorities said Monday. The crash occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 169 outside of the small town of Greeley, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm alert for Mumbai, warning of lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds at isolated locations on May 6 and 7. The forecast is part of a five-day weather outlook released by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai.
According to the IMD, wind speeds may reach up to 40 kmph during storm activity in some parts of the city.
Mumbai could also see light showers on May 5 and 8, while dry weather is expected to return by May 9, bringing an end to this brief spell of pre-monsoon activity.
Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts are likely to experience similar weather patterns between May 5 and 7. The IMD has marked the probability of thunderstorms in these areas as “Very Likely,” meaning residents should be prepared for possible strong winds and rain.
Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorm intensity tends to peak.
